After a standout career at Fort Atkinson High School, Derek took his talents to UW-Whitewater.

He was a four-year letter-winner for the Warhawks and was a unanimous first team all-conference selection in 2005 when he had 69 tackles, six interception, and two touchdowns from his strong safety position.

Derek spent the 2007 season with the Fort Wayne Fusion of af2. He played in 16 games for the Fusion that year and managed 86 tackles, three interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns. He also sprinkled in two rushing touchdowns for good measure.
